A Case Study - Great Torrington

The work of Great Torrington GC is notable for the efforts of a group of committed volunteers at the club, supported by a visiting PGA Professional, to engage with the local community and make their golf club welcoming and friendly.

By visiting local schools, 6^th forms, guides and scout groups, the club has delivered taster sessions to over 500 young people and grown its junior section from 8 members to 65 within the space of 24 months. They are now supporting Devon County with juniors and have won their local GolfSixes League for the past 2 seasons.

At the heart of the project is golf club are a group of club volunteers who have worked tirelessly to develop opportunities, constantly offering children the opportunity to try golf, whilst making the golf club a welcoming and friendly place to take up the game. Robert, Mark and Clarry have inspired the club to be one of the most proactive and welcoming clubs in the South West and doesn't rest on this - always ensuring a new flow of children are experiencing the game of golf.

New members to the club are offered an affordable membership and subsidised junior clothing in the form of club jumpers, polos and caps. If a family can’t afford this due to the nature of the demographic around the club, the club subsidises this so that no junior misses out. The end result is a proud junior section wearing their green club clothing with real passion and pride.

In addition to all of the above, the club has implemented a Golf Foundation sponsored tee on the course in recognition of the support we have been able to provide the club with. A Golf Foundation plaque outside the clubhouse also recognises the fact the club is a proud Golf Roots Centre.

At the recent 2022 70^th Anniversary Awards, the Golf Foundation announced Great Torrington GC as Junior Club of the Year.
